High Power Bidirectional DC-DC Converter

The goal of this project is to develop a high-efficiency bidirectional DC-DC charger for hybrid EV battery charging. Work began in 1998, and was sponsored by Ford, Ecostar, Ballard, Army Research Lab and United Silicon Carbide.
Key Technologies:
  • Multiphase interleaved to reduce current ripple and passive components
  • Coupled magnetics for core loss reduction
  • Synchronous conduction mode operation to reduce switching loss
Efficiency Measurement Results:
  • Use regenerative connection to measure losses
  • Measured efficiency exceeds 99%
  • High power density with small inductor and reduced cooling requirement
